Chandrayaan3 covers two thirds distance to Moon
As of Friday, Chandrayaan3, India’s third moon mission, launched on July 14, had traveled roughly two-thirds of the way to Earth’s sole natural satellite. The ISRO stated that the Chandrayaan3 spacecraft’s health is okay and that it has entered the moon’s area of influence.
Chandrayaan3 in Lunar Orbit

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) conducted the LunarOrbit Insertion (LOI) on Saturday, successfully putting the Chandrayaan3 spacecraft into lunar orbit. The LOI maneuver began at 7 p.m. and was carried out from the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru.
“Chandrayaan3 has been successfully launched into lunar orbit.” The Mission Operations Complex (MOX), ISTRAC, ordered a retroburning at the Perilune. The insertion was accomplished by retroburning at the Perilune for 1,835 seconds beginning at 7.12 p.m. IST, according to the space agency. “The maneuver produced the intended orbit of 164 x 18,074 km,” claimed ISRO.
After completing the critical maneuver, ISRO announced on the social networking site X, “Chandrayaan3 Mission: MOX, ISTRAC, this is Chandrayaan3.”
“I’m experiencing lunar gravity.” Following the approval of the LOI, ISRO will perform four orbit maneuvers to place the spacecraft in its final orbit, approximately 100 kilometers above the moon’s surface. The first of these maneuvers, orbit lowering, is slated for August 6 at 11 p.m.”The next orbit reduction operation is scheduled for August 6, 2023, around 11 p.m. IST,” ISRO stated. The Chandrayaan3 is made up of three modules: a lander, a propulsion module, and a rover. On August 17, the two components will be separated. Before the power descent phase for softlanding on the moon, a series of deboost maneuvers are also planned. The lander is scheduled to arrive on the moon’s surface at 5.47 p.m. on August 23.
The space agency announced on August 4 that India’s third moon mission, which launched on July 14, had traveled around two-thirds of the journey to the moon. Chandrayaan3 is India’s second attempt at softlanding robotic instruments on the lunar surface, following the failure of Chandrayaan2 in 2019. Only three countries, the United States, Russia, and China, have successfully softlanded on the moon.
The space agency stated that this is the third time in a row that ISRO has successfully put its spacecraft into lunar orbit, having previously done it in Martian orbit.
