The Institute for Economics and Peace’s 2023 Global Peace Index provides a comprehensive assessment of the world’s most peaceful countries. According to the 17th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI), the most generally used barometer of peace, the average level of global peace has dropped for the ninth year in a row. 84 countries improved, while 79 suffered declines.

This demonstrates that the falls outweighed the positives, as post-COVID rises in civil unrest and political instability remain large, and conflicts at the local, national, and international levels continue to escalate. Two of the report’s important findings noted in this article are Iceland’s continued reign as the world’s most peaceful nation and India’s rating.

Global Peace Index 2023 key Findings

The key findings of the Global Peace Index 2023 are presented below.

• Global conflict-related deaths increased by 96% to 238,000.
• Ethiopia now has more combat fatalities than Ukraine, breaking the international record set during the Syrian War.
• Conflict intensified in 79 countries, including Ethiopia, Myanmar, Ukraine, Israel, and South Africa.
• The global economic effect of violence increased by 17%, or $1 trillion, reaching $17.5 trillion in 2022, or 13% of global GDP.
• A Chinese blockade of Taiwan would result in a $2.7 trillion drop in global economic output, roughly double the loss caused by the 2008 global financial crisis.
• Despite the Ukraine conflict, 92 countries boosted military spending while 110 decreased military manpower.
• Conflicts are becoming increasingly globalized, with 91 countries currently engaged in some form of external combat, up from 58 in 2008.

A composite index that determines the amount of peace in various nations by weighing 23 quantitative and qualitative factors on a scale of 1 to 5. The lower the score, the more peaceful the country.

Global Peace Index and India’s Ranking 2023

According to the Global Peace Index, India ranks 126th out of 163 countries worldwide. The overall rating of 2.31 for India is lower than the global average of 2.314. Although the country continues to struggle to achieve high levels of peace, this provides an opportunity for progress. India’s overall peacefulness increased by 3.5% over the previous year, owing to reductions in violent crime, improved neighbor relations, and political turmoil.

The index of political instability in India improved as geopolitical tensions with China lessened as a result of fewer border incidents and overall public unrest.

• However, it falls well behind its neighbors Bhutan (17), the Maldives (23), Nepal (79), China (80), Bangladesh (88), and Sri Lanka (107).
• Pakistan and Myanmar, ranked 146th and 139th, respectively, are two countries that trail India.
• Afghanistan remains the country with the least level of peace on the planet.

Global Peace Index Key Facts 2023

The global peace index is published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), a global think tank. In addition to its Australian headquarters in Sydney, IEP has offices in Oxford, New York, and Mexico City. The GPI report provides the most comprehensive data-driven analysis of peace to date, including trends, economic relevance, and solutions for establishing peaceful societies. The index was created using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from credible sources, and it contains 99.7% of the world’s population.

What is Global Peace Index? 

   The Global Peace Index (GPI) is a report created by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) that assesses the relative peacefulness of nations and regions. The GPI ranks 163 independent states and territories (representing 99.7% of the world’s population) according to their levels of peace. The GPI has shown tendencies of rising worldwide violence and less peace over the last decade.

The GPI is created in collaboration with an international panel of peace specialists from peace institutes and think tanks, and data is gathered and compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The Index was originally published in May 2009, with additional editions published on an annual basis. It ranked 165 countries in 2015, up from 121 in 2007. Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former President of Finland and 2008 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Martti Ahtisaari, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, economist Jeffrey Sachs, former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Jan Eliasson, and former US President George H.W. Bush have all endorsed the study.
